Unlike a paid directory listing, Super Lawyers’ selection process is built specifically to prevent attorneys from buying or campaigning for a spot on the list:
- Peer nominations: attorneys are nominated by other lawyers who have personally observed their work — as opposing counsel, co-counsel, or in court.
- Independent research: a research team verifies credentials, professional standing, and disciplinary history.
- Evaluation on 12 indicators of peer recognition and professional achievement.
- Final review before the list is published annually in Super Lawyers’ state and regional editions.
Self-nominations aren’t accepted, and campaigning for votes can disqualify a candidate outright — which is part of why the designation carries weight within the legal community.
