Remote Work & Digital Nomads

Can You Work Remotely from France as an American? Your Real Options

France has no dedicated digital nomad visa. Americans who want to keep working for U.S. clients or employers need the right status, because the wrong one can create visa, tax and social security problems.

The short answer

Unlike some European countries, France does not offer a specific “digital nomad” visa. But several existing statuses can work, depending on who pays you, where your clients are, and how long you’ll stay.

Your main options

  1. Long-stay visitor visa. It works for people with passive income. It does not authorize professional activity in France, so it is not a safe default for remote workers.
  2. Entrepreneur or self-employed visa (“entrepreneur / profession libérale”). For freelancers and consultants who will run their business from France, with a viable plan and enough income.
  3. Talent Passport. For founders, investors and highly qualified professionals.
  4. Transfer by your U.S. employer. If your company has a French entity, an intra-company transfer may be possible.

Don’t forget taxes and social security

  • Living in France for more than 183 days a year generally makes you a French tax resident.
  • The U.S. taxes its citizens wherever they live, so you’ll keep filing U.S. returns.
  • The U.S.–France tax treaty helps avoid double taxation.
  • A U.S.–France social security agreement determines where you pay social contributions.
Immigration and tax go together. We’ll help you choose the right immigration status, and we recommend coordinating with a cross-border tax advisor before you move.
