Which category fits you?

  • Qualified employee. A degree at least at master’s level, a job with a French employer, and a salary above a minimum threshold.
  • Employee of an innovative company. A role at a company officially recognized as innovative.
  • EU Blue Card. A higher-education diploma or equivalent professional experience, a job contract of at least one year, and a salary above the Blue Card threshold.
  • Intra-company transfer. For employees of a U.S. company who are sent to a related French entity.
Salary thresholds change every year. Check the current figure before you sign a contract. A salary just below the line can sink an otherwise perfect application.

Key advantages

  • A residence permit of up to 4 years.
  • Your spouse and children receive a family permit, and your spouse can work.
  • The EU Blue Card offers mobility to other EU countries after a period of residence.
  • A strong foundation toward long-term residence in France.

How the process works

  1. You and your employer confirm the right category and salary.
  2. You apply for the long-stay visa through France-Visas and a VFS Global center in the U.S.
  3. After you arrive, you validate your visa or collect your card.
  4. You renew before your permit expires.

Common mistakes

  1. A salary below the threshold for the chosen category.
  2. A job title that doesn’t match the degree or experience.
  3. Picking the wrong category, when another would be faster or safer.
  4. Contract terms, such as duration or job description, that don’t meet the requirements.
