Step 1: Make sure France recognizes your marriage
If you married in the U.S., your marriage generally needs to be transcribed into the French civil registry through the French consulate. Transcription gives you a French marriage record and a livret de famille, the family record book you’ll use for many procedures in France.
Step 2: The long-stay visa for spouses
- Apply for the long-stay visa for spouses of French nationals (“conjoint de Français”).
- Provide your transcribed marriage record and proof of your spouse’s French nationality.
- Show that you share a real married life together.
Not sure where to start?
30 minutes with an attorney for $50, credited toward your fees.
After you arrive
- Validate your visa. It lets you work right away.
- Renew with a “private and family life” residence card.
- After several years of marriage, you can apply for a 10-year resident card.
- After 4 years of marriage, you may apply for French nationality by declaration. It’s 5 years if you haven’t lived in France together for 3 continuous years. French language requirements apply.
Common mistakes
- Arriving on a tourist entry and planning to switch status, which usually means going back to the U.S.
- Skipping transcription, which blocks the visa application.
- Incomplete civil documents, such as a missing apostille or certified translation.
