Who needs a student visa?
Any American admitted to a French university, grande école or language program for more than 90 days needs a long-stay student visa (VLS-TS “étudiant”).
How to apply
- Get admitted to your French program.
- Complete the Campus France “Études en France” procedure if your school participates, or apply directly on France-Visas.
- Prepare proof of resources, housing and health insurance.
- Attend your appointment at a VFS Global center in the U.S.
- Validate your visa online after you arrive in France.
Starting in the fall or spring?
30 minutes with an attorney for $50, credited toward your fees.
Working while you study
- You can work up to 964 hours a year, about 60% of full-time.
- Internships that are part of your program are allowed.
- After a master’s degree, you may apply for a one-year permit to look for a job or start a business in France.
Common mistakes
- Applying too late. Summer is peak season, and appointments fill up fast.
- Insufficient proof of funds for the full academic year.
- Forgetting to validate the visa after arrival, which can leave you without valid status.
